"Where can we go that's just us?" is a question we get from couples roughly twice a week between June and September. After enough summers of fielding it, the list has settled. Some are within fifteen minutes of our beach house in Acharavi; others are worth the longer drive. All of them are honest in the sense that you'll actually find privacy, even in August, if you go at the right time.
The Seven We Send People To
1. Avlaki Beach (15 minutes from us)
Our default recommendation. Long pebble bay between Kassiopi and the mountains, with olive trees growing right up to the shore. The genius is the natural shade — you don't need an umbrella. Two low-key tavernas at either end, but the middle of the beach stays peaceful even in August. Crystal water, a view of Albania across the strait. Couples who come once usually go back two or three more times before the holiday is over.
2. Kerasia Beach (20 minutes)
The elegant choice. White pebbles backed by cypress trees, calm clean water, and a single upmarket taverna where chilled white wine and grilled fish appear at the table without much fuss. Yachts occasionally anchor offshore. The narrow access road and limited parking keep numbers low. Lunch here is a proper occasion — book a table.
3. Loggas Beach, Peroulades (1 hour)
The dramatic sunset choice. Long drive west, but worth it once: a narrow strip of sand at the base of towering white-and-orange sandstone cliffs that glow like fire as the sun sets. Most visitors stay at the bar above the cliffs and watch from there, which means the beach itself is often near-empty even at golden hour. The natural amphitheatre feels almost private.
4. Rovinia Beach, near Liapades (75 minutes)
The quintessential hidden beach — a crescent of white pebbles between green cliffs, reached by a 20-minute walk through olive groves or a small boat from Liapades. No facilities at all. Sun trap in the late afternoon. Pack wine, cheese, olives from a village shop and arrive after 4pm; you'll often have it to yourselves.
5. Porto Timoni, Afionas (90 minutes)
The hike-in option. Two crescent beaches on either side of a narrow peninsula, each lapped by a different shade of blue. 25-minute hike down from the village of Afionas, steep in places. Pure magic at sunrise — leave the beach house at 5:30am and you'll have an entire double bay to yourselves before breakfast.
6. Limni Beach, West Coast (75 minutes)
The bay even locals sometimes forget about. A small cove of sand and fine pebbles reached via a dirt road through agricultural land. No bar, no music, no signs. Olive trees come almost to the water; a small chapel stands on the cliff. Bring everything you need.
7. Vatos / Mirtiotissa B (90 minutes)
The wild option. A scrappy little beach near the famous Myrtiotissa, reached by a steep unmarked path that keeps almost everyone away. Sand and pebbles, dense vegetation behind. Robinson Crusoe atmosphere. For couples who like the rough edges of nature; not for fussy beach days.
How to Time It
Before 10am or after 5pm turns even popular beaches private. The local rhythm is morning swim → long lunch → afternoon nap → evening swim. Tourist crowds peak from noon to 4pm, exactly the hours locals leave the beach. Inverse the schedule and the island opens up.
June and September are the sweet spots — water still warm, half the August numbers, restaurants still running full service. If you have flexibility on dates, these months are objectively better than peak August for couples seeking quiet.
Walk to the far end of any long beach. Most visitors set up close to the entrance and never move. Five minutes of walking transforms Avlaki, Glyfada or Agios Georgios.
Host's Tip
Buy a picnic at the village shop on the way — bread, hard cheese, olives, a chilled bottle of local rosé. Arrive at any of these beaches around 4pm. The afternoon sun is past its harshest, the day-trippers are leaving, and you'll have the cliffs lighting up in golden light by the time you've set up the blanket.
Best for…
Easiest from the beach house: Avlaki, Kerasia.
Best lunch: Kerasia.
Most secluded: Rovinia, Limni.
Most dramatic: Loggas Beach, Peroulades.
Best in August: any beach reached by hike or boat — natural crowd control.
Getting There
Avlaki and Kerasia are quick drives from our beach house. The west-coast options are 75–90 minutes each way, so plan them as full-day trips. Public transport doesn't really serve any of these beaches, especially the remote ones. A hire car is genuinely required.
★ Rent a Car with Herbie
Our recommendation. They deliver the car to the beach house and collect it from wherever you finish. Reliable, locally owned, and the prices are honest. Worth the cost on a romantic week.
