Being beach-house hosts means we get asked about water sports every other day. The gap between what tourists arrive expecting (jet-ski packages, parasail videos) and what they actually end up loving (a sunrise SUP, a half-day kayak trip) is enormous. This guide is the honest one — the activities we recommend, priced, and explained in the order our returning guests actually book them.
Five Things Our Guests Come Back For
SUP — The Morning Routine (€15/hour)
We keep three boards at the beach house for guest use, and morning paddles are the single most requested activity. Before the sea breeze kicks up, the water is glass-still and the light is golden — a 45-minute paddle down the coast and back is the perfect start to a day. If the house boards aren't enough, the operators at the nearest organised beach rent by the hour or day.
Sea Kayaking — The Half-Day Tour (€45)
Our favourite organised water-sport for guests who want more than a paddle. The half-day guided kayak tours from Kassiopi and Kalami take you into coves and sea caves that are unreachable otherwise — usually with a swim stop, sometimes with lunch. We've had guests come back saying it was the best day of their trip.
Motorboat Day (€90)
Rent a small runabout for the day — no license needed for sub-30hp boats — and explore the coast on your own schedule. Pick up supplies at the village market, find an empty cove, swim off the boat, have lunch under an awning. Our most-booked family activity. €80-120 plus fuel for a day.
Scuba Diving — Paleokastritsa (€80 fun dive)
Certified guests always do a dive at Paleokastritsa. The underwater cliffs, swim-throughs and 25m+ visibility are genuinely world-class for the Mediterranean. Beginners can try dive (€60-80) or go the whole way with an Open Water course (€380-450 over three or four days).
Windsurfing — Agios Georgios (€35/hour)
For the guests who arrive already knowing what they want. The west-coast winds are reliable and the schools at Agios Georgios Pagon and Arillas are run by people who've been teaching for decades. €30-40 for gear rental, €60-80 for an instructor. Wetsuit useful even in July.
A hosts' note
The organised east-coast beaches (Barbati, Dassia, Ipsos) have every water sport — jet-ski, parasail, banana boat, you name it. They're fine but loud. If you have younger children or want a quieter day, SUP and kayaks from our quieter corner of the coast deliver more peace per euro.
What We Tell Guests to Skip
Jet-ski hire. €70-90 for 20 minutes of noise. Once is enough.
Banana boats. Fun for teenagers for exactly one ride.
"Sunset cruise" tourist boats. Overpriced and generic. A private motorboat rental at the same time of day is cheaper and better.
Booking Ahead or On Arrival
SUP and kayak rentals — on arrival, always. Scuba in high season — 48 hours ahead. Boat rental in August — ideally a week ahead, especially for weekends. Guided kayak tours — we can call the operator for you when you check in.
Getting to the Locations
Our beach house has walking access to basic SUP and kayak rental. The better dive sites and the west-coast wind spots need a car.
Herbie Car Hire
Partner car-hire, delivery to the beach house, and they know our guests. Essential if you're mixing diving at Paleokastritsa with windsurfing on the west coast.
Book a carSeason Notes
Water sports run May to October. August is peak — hottest, busiest, most expensive. June and September deliver the best balance of conditions and crowds. April/early May are doable but some operators haven't opened yet. Winter is a no for most activities except surfboard-ready kite days on the west coast.
Staying Near the Water
Our beach house is on the north coast, minutes from the sea. For guests who prefer a town base and day-trip to water-sports locations, our sister apartment Oikia 4 in the Old Town gets you into Corfu Town's boat-rental scene.
